Maternity Questions

How many weeks is ideal for a pregnancy photography session?
Maternity sessions are usually held between 32 and 36 weeks. The timing is different for everyone and I recommend that you don’t wait too late because babies like to surprise us when it comes to the big arrival!

How soon should I schedule my session?
It’s never too early to schedule your maternity session. Sometimes I can accommodate last minute requests and if I can i'll do everything i can to make sure we can organise a session, but it's best to contact me about a month before you enter the 32-36 week stage.

How long do sessions last?
Maternity sessions last approximately 1 and a half hours, I don't tend to jump into photographing straight away as Ii feel it's important for you to feel comfortable and gauge how you'd like the session to go when we meet. I find that the happier you are, the more relaxed and enjoyable the experience will be.

Does time of the day matter when scheduling a pregnancy session?
Yes. If you''d like an outdoor session, I always recommend that we avoid the midday sun where the glare is harsh and will result in unflattering photos, I like to photograph either in the morning or the afternoon and for those that don't mind getting up early or staying a little later into the evening, the golden hour where you get beautiful warm light from the sun as it rises or sets. For photography that takes place in your home, during the consultation process I like to find out where the best natural light is in your house and which rooms the light comes into the most. That will help us decide the best time to arrange your home photography session.

Can my partner or my child be in the pictures?
Absolutely! I encourage it. It's lovely to see the father and any children joining in during such a special time. Equally if you'd prefer just to keep the session to yourself then that's fine too!

What about the weather if my session is outdoors?
I will usually photograph in most types of weather, but if the forecast isn't great (i.e - lots of rain) and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better by the day before your session, i'll usually give you a call so we can discuss and reschedule if need be.

What shall i wear, can you help me decide?
Of course, this is a really important part of your session, you have to feel comfortable but also confident in what you're wearing. For maternity sessions I find that either floaty dresses (e.g - maxi dresses) or more figure hugging (to show off your bump) but simple clothing with perhaps a cardigan over the top works well. We can also take into consideration what the weather is like, the time of year and where your session will be held.

I normally hide from cameras and i'm shy when it comes to having my photograph taken - will your sessions still work for me?
Yes, i promise. It's normal to feel a bit nervous when having a session completely styled around you and your bump, but most people feel exactly the same way. There is no pressure during our sessions, i want us to have fun and relax.

How long before I see my images and how will I view them?
I normally upload your photos to a personal online gallery within two weeks of your session. You'll be given your own password to view the images and browse through to pick out your favourites.

Newborn Questions

How long do sessions last?
Newborn sessions last approximately 2 hours - I like to give both you and your baby plenty of time to be comfortable and also allow for feeding or little breaks.

Where do newborn sessions take place?
To make sure everyone is comfortable, the best place to photogrsph newborns is in the comfort of your own home. The baby will feel comforted by sounds and smells that he or she is beginning to recognise (even at this early age!) and a huge benefit for you is that you'll have everything to hand so there's no pressure to try and get out of the door, pack a big bag of essentials, because you're already at home. Also - please don't panic about what your home post-baby, life can get a little crazy and i understand and have been there. Promise.

Who can join the newborn session?
Whoever you want! I encourage family members to be present in particular dad and other children that you have. It's so important to create lasting memories as these moments don't last long! If there are other special people who you'd like involved, like grandparents of family friends, just let me know before the day!

What will happen if my baby is fussy, hungry or just wants to be with me?
The great thing about lifestyle photography is that for the majority of the time your baby will always be on or near you. Babies will need feeding and comfort throughout the session and this is encouraged. Being fed paired with some cuddling allows your baby to stay content, relaxes you and allows me to capture intimate moments between mum (or dad!) and baby if you'd like me to. If you are interested in some more styled shots where i'll be holding your baby a little more than during a lifestyle shoot, the same applies - please feel free to tell me if you'd like to take a break or you want to feed comfort your little one. This is why we have 2 hours!

Things didn't quite go as planned with the birth - does that change things?
If you've had a longer than intended stay in hospital or there have been complications and you can't make the session that you've been booked in for, just let me know and we can rearrange your session to a better time.. If it's taking you a little longer to recover post birth, for example if you've had a complicated delivery or c-section birth, then we can work around ways to ensure that you're still comfortable and don't put yourself under too much pressure to move around whilst still getting some perfect moments.

My baby isn't a newborn anymore, can i still contact you for a session?
Of course. I love photographing babies at any age, please get in touch so that we can discuss if you'd like to know more.

Will there be lots of posed cheesy shots?
Absolutely not! My photography style is all about encouraging you to relax with your family and have a good time without worrying about the camera. The best way to help me capture the true essence of your child's personality is by talking and interacting with them in a way you normally would. This allows me to naturally interact and talk with you and your children and I promise will result in natural, gorgeous smiles all round.

Do we need to do anything beforehand?
Portrait sessions usually focus on just your child (or children). It's always good to think about things that they love to do, if there are any things that they particularly like to play with or do (for example their favourite teddy, a book, bubbles) that you might like to incorporate into the session. Alternatively you might just want to go completely natural, and allow your child to explore their environment in the location we choose to shoot at. Making sure everyone is fed, rested and happy is also important. Especially for your little ones, if all their needs are met, they are more likely to be happier wandering around and accepting of the camera.

The best way to help me capture the true essence of your child's personality is by talking and interacting with them in a way you normally would. It's helpful to have you close by to engage with them off camera, as parents you know exactly what makes them happy and engage. This allows me to naturally interact and talk with your children and I promise will result in natural, gorgeous smiles all round.
